Sporting confident it will maintain control of SAD leonine

The Sporting SAD General Assembly approved this Friday, unanimously, to extend the period of payment of mandatory convertible securities (VMOC), worth 55 million euros, for over ten years. The club is believed that New Bank and BCP will support the initiative.

In a statement sent to the Portuguese Securities Market Commission, Sporting advises that all holders of securities' values ​​Sporting in 2010 "gave its consent to the decision to extend the deadline for payment of convertible bonds and it is now up to the banks, which had representatives in general meeting today, decide whether they are willing to convert or not VMOC's in the SAD leonine actions, prolonging the period of maturity thereof.

Bruno Carvalho believes that the measure will be supported by the banks that hold these bonds.

If this plan were not approved, these securities would eventually be converted immediately into action on the 17th of January, endangering most of the club in SAD. The VMOCs concerned were contracted in late 2010, during the administration of President José Eduardo Bettencourt.

In addition to the New Bank, also the Portuguese Commercial Bank (BCP) has convertible bonds of Sporting SAD that are due on the 17th of January.

Coutinho eyes Liverpool trophy in 2016

Brazil midfielder Philippe Coutinho says he has a great chance of celebrating his third year at Liverpool in 2016 by landing his first major trophy with the club.

The five-time European champions are down in ninth spot in the Premier League but are through to the semifinals of the League Cup, where they face Stoke City in January, and have drawn German side Augsburg in the last 32 of the Europa League.

 Liverpool also meet fourth tier Exeter City in the third round of the FA Cup next month.

"We're all focused on fighting for trophies and I think we have a great chance in the competitions we're in," Coutinho told the club's website (www.liverpoolfc.com).

"Three wonderful years. In the beginning I was given a very warm welcome from the fans, the team, everyone who works here.

"I'm very grateful to the club and now I hope to be able to help the team win trophies, it's very important to keep battling," added the 23-year-old.

Coutinho joined Liverpool, who are without a major trophy since they lifted the League Cup in 2012, from Inter Milan in January 2013 for a fee of 8.5 million pounds ($12.65 million).

He has scored four goals in nine games since Juergen Klopp took over as manager in October and, being a focal point of their attacking moves, Coutinho said his desire to improve remained strong.

"We learn little by little," said the Brazilian. "When you arrive here the football is very different, the style of play, it's more intense, you use your body more, it's faster.

"These things I think I've improved on since I arrived, as I came from a different style of football, and I hope I can continue to improve."

Stoke boss has message for his former club 

STOKE manager Mark Hughes insists it is up to Manchester United’s players to dig themselves out of the hole that threatens to swallow up their season.

 Hughes — who had two spells at Old Trafford as a fearsome striker between 1980 and 1995 — has watched his former club tumble into a crisis under Louis van Gaal’s leadership.

United have gone six matches without a victory and won just three of their last 13 games, as they prepare to visit Hughes’ Stoke on Boxing Day. 

Under Van Gaal, the Red Devils have crashed out of the Champions League in the last month and are in danger of slipping out of the domestic title race after Saturday’s 2-1 home defeat to Norwich.

United are fifth in the Premier League, nine points behind surprise pace-setters Leicester, and in desperate need of a change of fortune.

But Hughes insists that it is time for the players to step forward, rather than pinning the blame elsewhere.

He said: “More often than not, if you’ve got a strong group of players and leaders within that group, they can get themselves together, shake themselves out of it and do something about it.

“That’s what all Manchester United teams in the past have done, and I would fully expect them to do it again this year.

“I think with all Manchester United teams, there is a responsibility and an onus on the players to go out and perform and play like United players, and understand what the demands of being part of a big club like that entails.”

Hughes knows all about the huge pressures of playing for the Old Trafford giants.

And he reckons that some players can crumble under the weight of expectation.

He said: “It’s a huge demand to play for Manchester United and a lot of players can’t deal with it.

“Over the years, there have been some outstanding players which have gone to Manchester United and haven’t been able to deal with the expectation that comes with being a United player. That can have an effect.”

Is Van Gaal running out of time?

United were booed by their own fans after Saturday’s defeat — and Hughes says that is no surprise.

He added: “The team I played in early on was probably the last one that was booed, to be honest, when I first broke in.

“There will be times when that happens. But as always it’s about performance.

“People go to United in numbers and if the level of performance isn’t correct then they will let their feelings be known.”

RUMOURS: Mourinho to replace Benitez at Real Madrid

The Portuguese, who was sacked by Chelsea last week after the champions' poor start to the season, could be set for a return to the Santiago Bernabeu

Jose Mourinho could replace Rafael Benitez as Real Madrid manager, according to AS. 

The Portuguese was sacked by Chelsea on Thursday after the champions lost nine of their opening 16 Premier League matches, leaving them just one point above the relegation zone.

Benitez's job has also come under threat this term, with Madrid two points behind league leaders Barcelona, who have a game in hand.

And if president Florentino Perez was to dismiss the former Liverpool boss, Mourinho could be the man to take his place in the dugout at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Mourinho spent three seasons at Madrid between 2010 and 2013, winning one La Liga title and one Copa del Rey.
