Young Scot on transplant waiting list asks people to join NHS Organ Donor Register

Morgan MacIntyre is one of the youngest people in the country on the transplant waiting list.

The 16-year-old had to endure dialysis from birth and received a kidney transplant when she was just five years old – but she now needs another one.

And yesterday she backed the festive campaign which asks people to join the NHS Organ Donor Register and help the 560 Scots awaiting an organ.

Morgan, from Fort William , was born with renal hypoplasia – abnormally small kidneys – after arriving seven weeks early and lost her sight following
the transplant.

Her twin sister Chloe was the luckier of the two because she developed completely healthily.

But the family became even more familiar with the donor register in tragic circumstances when the girls’ father Jason, a championship cyclist, was killed in a road accident just a year after Morgan had her transplant.

Morgan, who is in fifth year at Lochaber High School, said: “Things are becoming more difficult but I know what’s ahead. My hope is
that the wait isn’t long.

“There’s lots I want to do in life and getting the transplant would turn everything around for me.”

Mum Caroline describes her daughter – who plans a career in child care – as a “fighter”. She added: “We weren’t able to donate all of my husband’s organs because he was killed instantly but his corneas gave sight to two people.

“Knowing someone has to go through what I felt losing Jason is awful but someone out there could give hope to my Morgan.”

Organs can be transplanted after less than one per cent of deaths
in Scotland, but those odds can
be offset by having as many people as possible on the register.

And public health minister Maureen Watt is hopeful the festive campaign will succeed. She said: “Everyone has it in them to save a life this Christmas.”
